Buying at Auction

To many people the thought of buying at auction can be a little daunting; the thought of lifting one’s arm in a crowded auction room may seem to be a little frightening but at SMA this is not the case. We hold several auctions a year in Parkwood Johannesburg, with helpful and knowledgeable staff in attendance; each sale attracts a large number of collectors, museums and dealers which creates a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. For those unable to attend the auction, we have an ‘absentee bidder form’. Our web-site and illustrated catalogue is easy to understand with accurate descriptions and the photographs are taken by a professional photographer with the necessary skill to show off clear photographs as best possible. Each catalogue is carefully vetted and guaranteed original. The web-site and catalogue show a starting amount in order to assist you. Because off SMA’s local and international reputation, consignment stock arrives not only from South Africa but from all over the world, offering you the best possible selection of items available at our auctions is Parkwood, South Africa.

With the ever-increasing number of reproduction items entering the market of military collectables, it is of paramount importance that you can buy with total confidence. SMA ensure this by carefully examining every item that is submitted from the cheapest cap badge to the most expensive helmet or sword. Unlike other auction houses, SMA’s representatives try and attend as many arms / militaria / medal fairs and markets so as to maintain up to date information on the latest reproduction items to enter the collectors market. Due to this knowledge, SMA are happy to describe each and every item they sell, as original, of the period and as described to the best of our ability.
